Okay so I have to admit I haven’t attended a SHRM annual conference before. This year will be my first one and I am beyond excited. Yes I am that SHRM newbie who is counting down the days until I fly into Atlanta and get to attend great sessions, meet new people and learn all the cool new HR stuff!
I have been an HR practitioner for about 4 years or so, still a newbie in the field, and have recently switched over to the HR vendor side! So for me keeping up with all the HR news is very important for my job. I want to be able to relate to my clients and what they are dealing with everyday and give them sound advice when needed.
If you are considering skipping SHRM Annual this year here is my attempt to convince you otherwise:
- A conference is a great place to learn. Kind of obvious right? If you think you know it all, then you should definitely attend, because you don’t.
- Meet people! This is networking in its truest form! You communicate with people daily on Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, etc. This is THE conference where you can actually meet these people in real life, put a face to the name, and build relationships.
- Talk with vendors! I know some vendors can get a little crazy and pushy…but you most likely are using vendors to help run your business, so this is a great time to see what’s new, talk, and connect with new vendors.
- Have fun! Most importantly this is time away from the office to let your hair down a little, meet new people, enjoy some cocktails, and relax. Come back to the office refreshed with new information ready to hit the ground running.
I hope you do attend SHRM Annual this year! It’s in Atlanta, GA and it will be a great time! I’d love to connect with you and meet up if you are attending! Hit me up here on the blog, Twitter, Facebook, or email! I will be blogging for DriveThruHR at the conference and look forward to experiencing what this event is all about! If you can’t attend this year follow along on the Twitter stream #shrm12
See ya there!
